John Odom compiled a superlative record as both a scholar and an athlete during his years at Lenoir-Rhyne, after serving in the Navy during World War II.  He completed his requirements for a degree in physical education and history and in three years rather than the customary four. He also was named to Who's Who Among College Students in American Universities and Colleges in 1948-49.  He was also voted L-R's best all-around student, all this while working to support his family.  On the football field, Odom was an All-North State Conference and All-Southern selection as a tackle in 1948.  He served as the captain for the Bears in '48 and was selected as the team's most valuable player that year.  Upon graduation from L-R, Odom became the city recreation director for the Newton Recreation Department, staying in that capacity for two years.  In 1951, he became superintendent of Sipe's Orchard Home, Inc., a home for boys, and has held that position ever since.  He was honored by the Hickory Exchange Club as their "Man of the Year" in 1965, and was recognized as an outstanding alumnus of Lenoir-Rhyne.
