Gene Robinson was one-half of the famed "Robinson Twins" and starred in both football and baseball for Lenoir-Rhyne.  A native of Maynard, Mass., Robinson was a three-time all-North State Conference selection in football, earning that honor from 1950 through '52, and also made the all-conference baseball team in 1951.  One of the highlights from Robinson's career came when, as a sophomore, Gene picked off a pass and returned it 95 yards for a touchdown and the only points in a 6-0 victory on Thanksgiving Day.  A fine two-way performer for the Bears, Robinson intercepted 14 passes one season, just off the national record.  He also found time to help the Bears win a couple of conference track meets.  Upon graduation in 1953, Robinson played pro baseball for the Forest City minor league team and stole 56 bases during that rookie year.  After a stint in the service, Robinson went into teaching and coaching at Independence High School in Charlotte, N.C., in 1968, serving as assistant and head football coach, head wrestling coach and assistant baseball coach.  He was named Mecklenburg County Wrestling Coach of the Year in 1975.
