For over 30 years, Hanley Painter was a part of athletics at Lenoir-Rhyne as player, coach and administrator.  As a student-athlete, Painter participated in football, baseball and golf during the late 1940's and was an honorable mention All-American and team captain of the 1949 Bear football squad.  He was president of his senior class, voted best All-Around Student that year and was selected to Who's Who in College and Universities.  During Painter's coaching career, the Bears won or shared 12 conference championships.  L-R compted in three national championship football games and Painter was a four-time selection as conference and district Coach of the Year.  He served as President of the NAIA Football Coaches Association and spent 22 years on the NAIA District 26 Executive Committee, six of those as chairman.  Painter was also Lenoir-Rhyne's Athletics Director for over a decade before retiring in 1984.
