For over 30 years, Hanley Painter was a part of athletics at Lenoir-Rhyne as player, coach and administrator. Â As a student-athlete, Painter participated in football, baseball and golf during the late 1940's and was an honorable mention All-American and team captain of the 1949 Bear football squad. Â He was president of his senior class, voted best All-Around Student that year and was selected to Who's Who in College and Universities. Â During Painter's coaching career, the Bears won or shared 12 conference championships. Â L-R compted in three national championship football games and Painter was a four-time selection as conference and district Coach of the Year. Â He served as President of the NAIA Football Coaches Association and spent 22 years on the NAIA District 26 Executive Committee, six of those as chairman. Â Painter was also Lenoir-Rhyne's Athletics Director for over a decade before retiring in 1984.
