For over 30 years, Fred McCall was an active participant in the athletic and administrative duties of Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C. Â A three-sport standout at Lenoir-Rhyne College, McCall graduated from L-R in 1948. During his time at Lenoir-Rhyne, he earned North State Intercollegiate Athletic All-Conference honors in basketball and served as team captain for the Bears while leading the team in scoring his junior and senior years. Â McCall, born in Denver, N.C., served as an officer in the infantry during World War II and saw duty in the Philippines. Â Upon returning to the United States, he signed a professional baseball contract and played for the Rocky Mount in the Coastal Plain League and Newton in the Western Carolina League. Â McCall earned his masters degree from George Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn. Â From 1953 to 1961, McCall served as basketball coach and athletic director at the Buies Creek junior college. Â When Campbell Junior College became simply Campbell College in 1961, McCall remained as coach and athletic director for some eight more years. Â During his involvement with the college's athletics, McCall started and developed, along with former Wake Forest Coach "Bones" McKinney, the Campbell College Basketball School for Boys (one of the first and largest basketball schools in the state at the time). Â McCall also invented the McCall Rebounder, a training aid that revolutionized the teaching of rebounding skills and was sold across the United State and in foreign countries. Â In 1969, McCall became Vice President for Advancement at Campbell and in 1979 was named Vice President of Administration.
