Larry A. "Butch" Gunter played three seasons for the Lenoir-Rhyne football team and became one of the best defensive players in school history. Gunter, a nose guard, was named the South Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1983. In addition, he earned NAIA Second-Team All-American honors that same year as well. Gunter was a two-time All-NAIA District 26 and All-South Atlantic Conference First Team honoree, and finished his career with 269 tackles and 26.5 sacks. Â Gunter, an honorable mention All-American in 1982, also coached the defensive line for Lenoir-Rhyne in 1988 and helped the Bears capture a share of the SAC Championship. Â Gunter was drafted by the Memphis Showboats of the United States Football League before being named Vice President of the Eastern Region Business Unit for the Wyndham Vacation Ownership in Williamsburg, Va.
