Hall of Fame
Charles Sanders was one of the best linemen ever to wear a Lenoir-Rhyne uniform. His accomplishments and contributions came during the most successful eras of Bears Football. Sanders was a first-team NAIA All-American in 1959, a year that the Bears finished 10-1 and advanced to the Holiday Bowl. He was also an integral part of the school's national championship team in 1960. Lenoir-Rhyne lost only four games during Sanders' four years on campus, posting a 38-4-2 record during the stretch from 1957 to 1960. Sanders was a valued member of the Monroe High School coaching staff for 30 years beginning in 1961. He served as an assistant coach for 21 years. Sanders also coached the girls basketball team for six years and was the school's track coach for six years. In 1984, he became Monroe High School's Athletic Director, a position he held until 1989 when he turned his attention back to the classroom. Sanders retired from education in 1991.
