Carl Bartles capped off his collegiate football career in 1970 by achieving first-team NAIA All-American status. Â As a senior in 1970, he rushed for 1,261 yards, a school record that stood for 22 years. Â Bartles' record-setting season enabled him to finish his career with 3,677 rushing yards, a total that ranked first in school history at the time. Â Throughout his playing days, Bartles was known as a durable runner. Â In addition to leading the conference in rushing for three consecutive years, he set and stlll holds Lenoir-Rhyne records for carries in a game (47) and in a season (297). Â His 789 career carries now ranks second all-time. Â After graduating from Lenoir-Rhyne in 1971, Bartles signed a contract with Ottawa of the Canadian Football League. Â He also signed free agent contracts with the Washington Redskins of the NFL and the Birmingham Americans of the World Football League between the years of 1972 and 1975. Â Bartles, who also received Lutheran All-American honors, served as football coach at Piedmont High School and was employed by the Union County Schools. Â
