Pope was a three-sport athlete at Lenoir-Rhyne College from 1960 to 1964.  He was a member of the 1960 NAIA National Championship football team.  He was named the team's most valuable player as a quarterback in 1963 as well as receiving the Lee Kirby Award and being named co-captain of the team.  He was named to "Who's Who In American Colleges" in 1964 and was selected as one of the "Outstanding Young Men in America" by the national organization in 1975.  Pope retired in 2017 after 47 years as a coach including 34 in the National Football League.  Pope won four Super Bowls as an Assistant for the New York Giants (1986, 1990, 2007 and 2011) and also coached for the Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys.
