    Ben Sheffield was a dual-sport athlete, playing football and track and field during his time in Hickory. Sheffield sandwiched his athletic career around a two-year service in the army. Sheffield was the team leader in receiving during each of the 1974, 1975 and 1976 seasons. Sheffield was a SAC 8 Football Conference Champion in 1975 and a 12th round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 1975 and 1976, Sheffield was named: All-Conference, All-District and an Honorable Mention All-American.
     In Track and Field, Sheffield was a three-year letterman and a 1975 Carolinas Conference All-Conference performer. In 1995, Sheffield was elected to the USSA Softball Hall of Fame.
