Eddie Haupt was a standout on the Lenoir-Rhyne football team during one of the most successful periods of Bears football. Â Lenoir-Rhyne lost only three games during Haupt's four years on campus, posting a 38-3-2 record between 1958-61. Â He was an honorable mention Little All-American Team selection as a junior in 1960 and as a senior in 1961. Â He also earned All-Conference and All-State accolades in 1961. Â He was a vital member of the 1960 national championship team that finished 11-0-1. Â Haupt was owner of the H&W Drug Company in Newton, N.C., since 1964. Â He was also the manager of Commercial Real Estate in Newton, N.C., served with the National Guard from 1964-71, and was part of the Newton Downtown Revitalization Committee. Â He also served on the Newton Zoning Board for 18 years. Â An avid tennis player, Haupt won the USTA Men's 35 singles championship in 1983 and won the 1991 USTA doubles league tennis championship.
