James Garrett was a four-year letterwinner in football and baseball. On the football field in 1939, he was Lenoir-Rhyne's first ever Little All-American first-team selection. Garrett, who also garnered All-Conference honors in baseball as a centerfielder, had a career .393 batting average. Â Off the field, his activities on the campus included being President of the Literary Society and being a writer for the school paper. Â Garrett also was an honor student who was president of the student body. Â Upon graduation, Garrett entered Cal Tech and earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in meteorology. Â He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II holding the rank of lieutenant commander. Â After his release from active duty, Garrett entered Duke University and received A.M. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics and philosophy. Â Academically, Garrett taught mathematics at Lenoir-Rhyne for eight years between 1972 and 1980. Â He also has instructed at Duke, Georgia Tech and Florida. Â In 1972, he was awarded an Honorary Degree in Doctor of Science by Lenoir-Rhyne.
