James Garrett was a four-year letterwinner in football and baseball. On the football field in 1939, he was Lenoir-Rhyne's first ever Little All-American first-team selection. Garrett, who also garnered All-Conference honors in baseball as a centerfielder, had a career .393 batting average.  Off the field, his activities on the campus included being President of the Literary Society and being a writer for the school paper.  Garrett also was an honor student who was president of the student body.  Upon graduation, Garrett entered Cal Tech and earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in meteorology.  He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II holding the rank of lieutenant commander.  After his release from active duty, Garrett entered Duke University and received A.M. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics and philosophy.  Academically, Garrett taught mathematics at Lenoir-Rhyne for eight years between 1972 and 1980.  He also has instructed at Duke, Georgia Tech and Florida.  In 1972, he was awarded an Honorary Degree in Doctor of Science by Lenoir-Rhyne.
