Hall of Fame
As a child, Bob Mauser lived in what is now one of the college fraternity houses. On the basis of an outstanding high school football career, his options for college were wide open. He chose to cross the street and matriculate at Lenoir-Rhyne. A four-year letterman on the 1950-1953 football teams, he experienced the highs and lows of Lenoir-Rhyne Football. He was a significant contributor to teams that, beginning in 1950, were 8-2, 10-1 and 8-1. As one of the co-captains in his senior year, he was a leader on a team that endured a 4-5 season. The high points of hs career occurred with the 1951 and 1952 teams that captured the conference title. In each of those years, the teams set new conference scoring records, in 1952 averaging over 40 points per game. The only loss suffered by the 1952 team was a 21-12 defeat by the University of Tampa in the Cigar Bowl. In 1952, Mauser was named to the All-Conference and All-State teams and received an Honorable Mention for the Associated Press Little All-America Team. The All-State Team named by the Greensboro Daily News included twenty-two players of whom only four represented the small colleges of the state. At the time, Coach Clarence Stasavich called Mauser the best defensive lineman he ever had. Following his graduation from Lenoir-Rhyne in 1954, Mauser entered the U.S. Army and was an All-Star tackle for a service team. After his army service, Mauser returned to Hickory and embarked on a career as a part-time farmer and owner/operator of Hickory Livestock.
