Bus Newton starred in both football and baseball for the Bears before his graduation in 1934. Â He earned All-North State Conference honors in 1931 and '32 in football, playing as an offensive back and safety on defense, and was a true "triple threat" - a runner, passer and kicker. Â He was selected as a member of the first all-time Lenoir-Rhyne all-star team, which was chosen in 1949. Â Newton played primarily in the outfield during his baseball career and was captain of the 1934 squad that posted a 12-6 mark and had a team batting average of .306. Â He was an all-conference performer in that sport as well. Â After graduating from L-R, Newton embarked upon a career in education. Â He served as a teacher, coach and principal, with 30 of his 35 years being spent in Macon County in North Carolina, primarily at Highlands High School. Â He also found time to play, manage and coach summer baseball for some 20 years. Â Newton retired from teaching in 1969.
