Giles Setzer was a four-time all-conference performer in baseball for the Bears between 1950 and 1953. Â He gained all-state recognition during his junior and senior years. While leading the baseball team to a combined record of 58-11 during his four years, Setzer compiled a .341 career batting average. Â He earned all-conference honors each of his four years on varsity, playing three different positions: Â catcher, centerfield and first base. Â Setzer went on to a six-year minor league careeer with the Chicago Cubs after graduating from Lenoir-Rhyne in 1953. Â On the football field, Setzer was a two-time all-conference end. Â He played in the first bowl game the Bears ever took part in, the Pythian Bowl in 1951. Â Setzer also played in Lenoir-Rhyne's 1952 appearance in the Cigar Bowl. Â Setzer served in the United States Army between 1953 and 1955 before starting a successful high school teaching and coaching career. Â He taught within the Catawba County Schools, Hickory City Schools and Gaston County School Systems between 1957 and 1989. Â Setzer was a coaching staff member of the 1974 Ashbrook High School Team that won the 1974 State 4A Football Championship. Â He also served as a football referee and baseball umpire at the prep and college levels for 24 years between 1951 and 1975.Â
