Giles Setzer was a four-time all-conference performer in baseball for the Bears between 1950 and 1953.  He gained all-state recognition during his junior and senior years. While leading the baseball team to a combined record of 58-11 during his four years, Setzer compiled a .341 career batting average.  He earned all-conference honors each of his four years on varsity, playing three different positions:  catcher, centerfield and first base.  Setzer went on to a six-year minor league careeer with the Chicago Cubs after graduating from Lenoir-Rhyne in 1953.  On the football field, Setzer was a two-time all-conference end.  He played in the first bowl game the Bears ever took part in, the Pythian Bowl in 1951.  Setzer also played in Lenoir-Rhyne's 1952 appearance in the Cigar Bowl.  Setzer served in the United States Army between 1953 and 1955 before starting a successful high school teaching and coaching career.  He taught within the Catawba County Schools, Hickory City Schools and Gaston County School Systems between 1957 and 1989.  Setzer was a coaching staff member of the 1974 Ashbrook High School Team that won the 1974 State 4A Football Championship.  He also served as a football referee and baseball umpire at the prep and college levels for 24 years between 1951 and 1975.
